Through digitalisation and automation, a factory can halve its workforce, and still double its output!
Jessie Yeo (in red) told me she witnessed this visiting smart factories in Chengdu, China on a learning journey. I chatted with Jessie and several union leaders ahead of the May Day Rally, to find out how their industries are doing.
Toh Hock Poh (fourth from right), who also went to Chengdu, observed how the Chinese factories collected real-time data to ensure a smooth production process. The machines were highly automated. Workers were no longer operating machines, but troubleshooting them.
Both Jessie and Hock Poh were impressed how hungry the Chinese workers were – eager to pick up new skills and training in their free time.
Our firms and workers must adapt to these changing conditions and technologies to stay relevant. We need to be flexible, spry and adaptable, and always stay hungry.
